How to Add a Blog Post to WordPress

In this article, I will show you how to correctly add a blog post to WordPress. These are the basic steps with helpful tips to guide you as you add a blog post.

Writing Your Blog Post

All bloggers do things differently. I consider myself old-fashioned. There is nothing better than having a tablet and a pin and a cup of coffee and just writing. Not in any necessary order or style, but getting my thoughts about my subject on paper.

I prefer a quiet environment, while other bloggers can sit in a coffee shop and write their blog posts using their laptops. It all depends on what you like best and what environment sparks your creativity.

After I hand-write my blog post, I then type it into a Google Document. Working in a Google Doc allows me to visually see everything. This helps me format, move things around, edit things, and add or delete things before I add them to WordPress.

ALWAYS type your blog post into some form of document that can be accessed later. A spreadsheet is a great idea for keeping blog posts organized.

A spreadsheet of blog posts is especially important to start from blog post number one! You do not want to wait until you have hundreds of blog posts and realize you have no documentation!

Adding Your Blog Post to WordPress

After logging in, head over to your WordPress dashboard and click on the “Posts” option. Then, click on the “Add New” button to create a new blog post.

Step Two: Enter the title of your blog post.

Step Three: Under the heading, add your content (text, images, etc.)

Tip: Be sure to use headings throughout your blog post. H1 is the title of the blog post. While H2 and H3 are subheadings.

Step Four: Be sure to add a “featured image” to your blog post. This is located on the right side under the “Post” tab.

Step Five: Check your appropriate category. This is located in the same area as the “featured image.”

Tip: A blog post category is a way to group similar blog posts on a website. A category makes it easy for readers to find the content they are interested in and also helps with organizing your blog. For example, if you run a food blog, you might have categories such as “Breakfast”, “Dinner”, “Desserts”, “Vegetarian”, etc. When you create a new blog post, you can assign it to one or more categories so that it appears in the appropriate sections of your website.

Step Six: Add tags. The Tags section is located directly under the Categories section.

Tip: In WordPress, tags are a way to organize your blog posts based on specific topics or keywords. They are similar to categories but more specific. Tags describe the content of your post in more detail. They help your readers easily find related posts by clicking on a specific tag.

Step Seven: Review your post using the YOAST plugin for SEO tips. Check out the “Readability” and the “SEO” tabs and aim for the green smiley face. (Requires FREE YOAST plugin). This section is at the bottom of your blog post.

Tip: Yoast is a popular WordPress plugin that helps you optimize your website for search engines. It provides you with tools to optimize your content for specific keywords, analyze your website’s readability, and create XML sitemaps.

Step Eight: Hit publish! Of course, if you are not ready to publish, you can always choose “save draft” to come back at a later time to finish your blog post.

Blog posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological order on a blog’s homepage, with the most recent post appearing at the top. I always display the date my blog post was published inside the blog post itself. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find up-to-date information from a blog post, but you can’t find a date!
